Your Personal Affairs Need To Be In Order, Get Them Organized!

OrganizedTo Be Prepared Is To Be Organized!

Nobody wants to think about it, but we have to!!!

For the past couple of weeks, me and my husband both experienced having our aging parents in the hospital.  It is hard for us to see our parents getting older.  They are the people who raised us and taught us to become responsible, loving & independent human beings.

They are our children’s grandparents, and our grandchildren’s great grandparents and are an important and vital part of all of our lives.

My husband’s parents are older than mine, so we assumed that we would be confronted with difficult issues concerning their health sooner than mine.

Even though my parents are younger, we still had a scare with my dad this past week.  He stayed in the hospital for a few days and came home feeling great.  Whew!

The day my dad came home from the hospital, we got a call telling us that my husband’s mom fell and had been rushed to the ER.  Her fall caused her to break her pelvis bone and she will be in a rehab facility for weeks or months.  Which leaves us with my father-in-law to look after while he is home alone.

I told you all of this for a reason!

These turn of events caused my husband and I to look inward and think of our own children if this had happened to us.  As a result, we spent the weekend creating a binder that organized copies of all our personal information into categories.

organized

I am not talking about having your will done.  But you should.  I am talking about organizing necessary information that our

We do not want our children to scramble and search for things, so we made it easy for them. children would need if  we were in an accident that lands us both in the hospital at the same time.  Especially if it is for an extended period of time or ultimately worse.

What did we put in our binder?  Things our children may not know!……..

  • organizedOur medical history
    • Primary Physicians & phone numbers
    • Pharmacy & phone number
    • Blood Type
    • Family medical history
    • Previous surgeries or procedures with dates
    • What we are allergic to
  • Daily medications
    • Name of medications
    • What they are taken for
    • Dosages
    • How often taken
  • Copies of:
    • Medical insurance cards (front and back)
    • SS cards
    • Drivers licences front & back (with a note that we are donors)
    • Vehicle insurance cards (front & back) with agent’s name and number
    • Homeowner’s insurance with agent and phone number
    • Birth certificates
    • Marriage certificate (I don’t know, we just put it in there)
    • Car titles
    • Bank cards & pin#
    • voided checks from accounts —>(someone has to pay your bills while you are in the hospital)
    • Credit Union
    • Savings, etc.
    • Copy of Will
  • Miscellaneous
    • Valuable items and where they are located etc…
    • User names/passwords

Hide your binder well….Do not leave it laying around.  Keep in well secured place.  It does not have to be in your house!  However it is important that it is well organized and your children know exactly where to find it.

WARNING:  If the wrong person gets hold of this personal information, it would be disastrous.  If your children cannot find this information it could also be disastrous.  So keep it hidden well and your children informed!

I hope this helps! Get your stuff organized!

Happy Organizing!!!

This is EXCELLENT advice. I have aging parents, too, and you’ve written a very valuable post about being prepared and smart.
