Eating out more than you should, spending money you don’t have? Why? You didn’t make the time to go grocery shopping? Or you procrastinated because you dread the task? I use to. It never fails, if I go grocery shopping without a list in hand, I always spend too much time and money in the store.
When my kid’s were teenagers, eating me out of house and home, I found myself grocery shopping every 2 – 3 days just grabbing enough to get by. This was very expensive, and most importantly, TIME consuming, so I’ve streamlined a grocery shopping system that still works for me today. You will be able to print out a sample of it and customize it for your family.
It is very simple.
Assuming that you are like me, you have a favorite grocery store that you use more than others. Bargin hunters and extreme couponers tend to go to multiple stores, but that’s not me. Yes I love a bargin too, but I hate grocery shopping so I try to make my trips as quick and painless as possible. I love a stocked freezer and pantry but I hate shopping to fill them up.
We are all creatures of habit so we usually buy the same things on a regular basis. If you are busy like me you need something to make grocery shopping quick and easy. Even though you know where your favorite products are in the store, but tend to get side tracked with other things that are not necessities, you need to implement this system.
If you are familiar with the layout of your grocery store, this system will not take long to implement. Make a list, right where you are sitting, of all the staple products you purchase on a regular basis. Include family favorites, cleaning supplies, etc.
Now, picture your store and the layout of the isles starting from the far end of the store, working towards front check out. Most women could possibly do this by memory, if not, the next time you go to the store, make a list of the isles by name such as (baking products, dairy, etc.) It is important that you correctly identify the isles, in the exact order, to prevent back tracking in the store, which is wasting time.
Next, using my sample document, type out all of the products that I mentioned above making sure that you put them on your list in the order of the isles.
After you save it to Microsoft Word, edit the products, print and place on fridge. When you run out of something on the list put a check beside it. If I have a coupon for one of the items, I write a “C” beside it and paper clip the coupon to list. So when I am ready to go grocery shopping, I grab the list with coupons and take off to the store. I am focused only on the products on my list. I do not wander the store, I am systematically grabbing what I need and leaving. I call it power shopping!
