Organizing Basics:

Organizing has a basic rule of thumb, everything having a place and everything in it’s place.  If you want to get organized, you are going to have to purge items from your home that you do not use and that are creating clutter.

Before you can start the organizing process, I want you to look at a room in your house.  Ask yourself these questions:
At first glance, what do you see that is out of place or cluttered?  How is this space dysfunctional?  What do I aspire this space to be?  Would I be embarrassed if a visitor/friend saw this room?  Can I find things quickly when I need them?

Experts say that organizing your bedroom is the best place to start.  Your bedroom should be a sanctuary for you.  It’s the first room you see when you wake up and the last room you see when you go to bed.  A disorganized bedroom could actually affect how well you sleep!  Also, you will be inspired to keep organizing in another room.  It’s just like cleaning a house.  You want to start at the back of your house and work your way forward, because your ultimate goal is organizing your whole house. This will make you anxious to move forward.  If you start organizing in the room that is the first room people see, you will be less likely to keep the organizing going by moving “back into” the house.  Start in the back and you will get all of the organizing done!  It’s a psychological  thing.

a. KEEP: Things to find a place for within your home

b. THROW AWAY:  Remember we are de-cluttering.  Organizing is impossible if you do not get rid of unnecessary items that are causing the clutter.

c. DONATE/CARPORT SALE: For things that have value, but you can live without. Plus it’s a great way to actually make money to reward yourself for your accomplishments

d.  Keep, but does not belong in this room (optional)

2.  Labeling maker  labeling machinesOrganizing.  A label maker is a must for organizing.  You will use it a million times with the various projects that we do together.  By properly labeling things during the organizing of a room, allows you to see what is inside of your containers, which helps you find things easier.  You will use it more in some rooms than you do in others.  See why I love my label maker:  A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS #1

3.  A section in your planner “Brain” labeled “Products I need to get organized.” This list will help as you go through all of my categories.  Order it all at one time and you will save a ton of money, not to mention you do not have to leave the house and they ship it right to your door!!  Doesn’t get any better than that!

Organizing and cleaning go hand in hand.  After you have removed the items from your room, make sure you give everything a good cleaning before placing things back in.  For instructions on how to properly clean the room see: MASTER BEDROOM.  Check out the below tags for related articles.

Hey Carrie, It is really cool that they have such a large room, but I can understand the problem of not having a closet. Are they boys or girls? Either way there are many ways to remedy this. Free standing wardrobes are great for a quick fix, plus it adds a nice piece of furniture in the room. You could also, build a wire closet system to one of the walls, with a curtain to hide it from view. If you could let me know what gender they are, I can be more specific with suggestions. Plus, could you email me pictures of the room from different angles? Visualizing the space would be a great tool for me. Looking forward to hearing back!

Hey Susie, You are giving me the kick in the pants that I need to get my house organized. With school out I hope the kids will help! Not! Anyway I was wondering if you have any suggestions on what do to if you do not have a closet in a bedroom? My oldest two sleep in the bonus room upstairs, which is a big room but no closet. It is really hard to get organized with out one. Look forward to hearing back. Thanks, Carrie
