Organizing a pantry can actually be fun. With the right tools, pantry storage and organizers, you can make the pantry your favorite place in your house.
Most people do not know anything about organizing a pantry. They just throw the food in and shut the door. I am here to help and teach you how easy organizing a pantry can be!
Hey, we are busy. We go to the grocery store and come home with tons of bags to unload. The only think we can think of is to getting the groceries put away as fast as possible.
But, when you have a system in place, this chore becomes something you do not mind at all. In fact, when I restock my food it makes me feel better to see full containers instead of empty ones. Plus, a good system also makes it easier for the kids to help because they know where things go as well.
To begin organizing a pantry, the first thing is to completely clear out the closet. Sweep up any crumbs and wipe it out. This is a good time to give it a fresh coat of paint. When organizing a pantry, most people don’t think about using colorful paint. Color makes an impact! Once this is completed, line your shelves with a easy clean liner.
Organizing a pantry can also help eliminate unwanted pests. (It happens)
Once your pantry closet is clean and fresh, only put back the items that you actually need or will use. Make sure you check all expiration dates. Organizing a pantry requires that you purge the things you do not need. This would be a good time to donate to a local food bank.
When organizing a pantry see: ORGANIZING BASICS Once you have sorted your items, then you can start the process of organizing a pantry. The top shelf is for items that you don’t use everyday. Routinely used items should be on the middle shelves, such as canned goods.
The whole point of organizing a pantry is to make everything easily accessible. Just like the rest of your house, everything has a place and everything in it’s place. However, while organizing a pantry, consider using decorative and colorful storage solutions.
Place like items together, such as green beans. Line them up with labels facing the front like at the store. Do the same with any other product that you have multiples of, making sure all like items are together.
When organizing a pantry, use air tight food storage containers for products such as, sugar, flour, open packages, etc. This keeps unwanted pest out of your food and to keep everything fresh.
For small, loose items such as (oatmeal packets, hot chocolate, snacks etc) use smaller containers that stack together and label them accordingly . The most important tool you could have while organizing a pantry is a label maker. See why I love mine and get your’s here: A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS #1 Labeling your containers is very important because it helps you to find things quickly. For your “out of the way” storage that goes on the top shelf, such as seasonal cookie cutters, grilling utensils, duplicate spices, etc. I like to use decorative boxes and baskets that are clearly labeled.
When I was organizing professionally, I found that organizing a pantry was one of the most rewarding, because the entire family benefited from results.

Hey Sophie, You are so right about organization making life easier. It saves you time, money and energy.
Hey Susan, I love the spice door too!!!
Hey Toni, Good to see you back! Yes, organizing is a form of decorating. 🙂
I love that: Organizing is a form of decorating!
That spice door is to-die-for. Love it!
Organisation makes life so much easier! I hate mess and it’s always helpful to know where everything is so that you don’t have to waste time routing around!

It doesn’t have to be big to be great!!!

It can save you money that is for sure. When you can see what you have, you will less likely purchase things you already have.
Hey Amy, I know you have your pantry in your basement but at least you have one! No this is not my pantry. I live in an old house that never had a pantry. I am currently using a large restored antique pie safe for mine. However, my husband is building me a big walk-in like in the picture. The pie safe is great, but it’s temporary. I have other plans for it. When my new pantry is finished, I will definitely be posting pics of it.
Hey Audrey, What a jewel you have! Claim that closet girl!!!!!
I have a small pantry (and a small house) and I need a system. I, too, have an empty nest and it is past time to get cracking. Thank you!
I wish I had a pantry, we just have a few cabinets and its pretty cramped in there. I do try to keep it organized though. It makes a world of difference to keep it tidy (no more runs to the store only to find out we had that item all along).
Susie,
Is that picture at the top your pantry? If so, I am green with envy. It’s beautiful! My pantry is in the basement and a long ways from my kitchen, but whenever I take the time to de-junk it and clean it and organize it, I always feel very neat and clever. Thanks for this post!
Love this , We have a closet off kitchen that would make a great pantry!
Hey Gladys, I have a empty nest as well. Now, I do it for me! 🙂
Hey Stella, I understand completely that a walk in pantry can make you feel that way. Especially when it is organized. 🙂
I remember the walk in pantry when I was a kid. I loved it! I don’t know why, but it gave me a feeling of richness. So much food you needed to have a whole room full of it. 😀
Great post. I would have done almost anything for this post when everyone lived at home! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Amethyst! Your smaller pantry can work great for now if you have a system. It doesn’t have to be big to be great! Thanks for coming!
Love it! I was just thinking about this earlier today. We have a small pantry right now, but when we buy a new home in a couple years, a walk-in pantry is going to be a requirement! 😀
