Spice Cabinet: Completely empty out the spice cabinet. Wash down the shelves, cabinet doors (inside and out) and or any spice racks that you already have. This is a good time to put in fresh new shelf liners as well. Now it is ready to get organized!
Simplify your spices by getting rid of the ones that are old or that you never use. If you are like most people, you have duplicate containers of spices due to the fact that you couldn’t find one so you went out and purchased another. If the duplicated items are still good, you might want to consolidate the partially used ones into one container. If you still have multiples, you can give them to a friend or create a storage container labeled “Duplicate Spices” (with your label making machine) to keep in your pantry or another, out of the way location. Why I love my labeling machine: A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS #1 Before heading to the store, check this container before buying new. This frees up valuable space and money while giving you more options on how you want the spice cabinet to look and function. I like the tiered spice racks, so you don’t have to dig for what you need. Keep the spices that you use everyday in one area close to the front.
If you’re like me, you have seasonal spices that you only use once or twice a year, such as sage, poultry seasoning, cookie sprinkles, etc. I have a storage container labeled “Holiday Spices” and it is kept on the top shelf of my pantry out of my way.
For those seasoning “packets” that get buried under the clutter, try using an attractive basket or container that is just the right size to stand the packets up according to size (taller ones in back, shorter ones in front).
If you like to shop at the big box stores and have huge containers of spices, get some smaller spice containers (label them appropriately) then store the larger ones together in a suitable container that is clearly labeled “Large Spices” so you will be able to get refills quickly. Place this container near the “Holiday Spices” so everything has a place and clutter free.
Last but not least, carefully place your spices with the labels facing the front. Everything should be front and centered! This gives the space a fresh and appealing look. You might actually be inspired to cook something fabulous!
One project down! Not only is your spice cabinet organized, but it is clean inside and out. If you keep accomplishing these short term goals, soon your entire kitchen will be clean, clutter free with everything in its place.
